In this scientific statement the American College of Cardiology charts the rise of gene and base editing as a therapeutic strategy in cardiovascular disease. It places the rapid advances — such as permanently switching off PCSK9 — in a broader context and discusses the technology, the potential targets and the clinical, safety, regulatory and ethical questions that accompany these one-time, durable interventions. The international author panel includes Dutch researcher Menno Hoekstra (Leiden University).
