When you are attending the WONCA 2026 congress in Paris, please join us at our annual EPCCS symposium focussed on Cardio Kidney Metabolic (CKM) Disease in primary care
Title of the symposium is
The most important cause of death, and crucially premature death, in most countries are events secondary to cardio-kidney-metabolic disease (CKM). Further, CKM is the main cause of major disability and therefore health and social care expenditure as well as reduced quality of life for patients and families. Fortunately, CKM has the largest evidence base in medicine and is the focus for much innovation in healthcare interventions given the importance of CKM disease to health systems. However, unfortunately, Health systems are failing to effectively implement prevention strategies in CKM such as better identify and mitigate the common risk factors that drive CKM disease. And this is despite the WHO’s priority call for increased focus on disease prevention and long-term condition (LTC) management.
Primary care has a key role to play in disease prevention and as much as 40% of GP caseload will relate to CKM disease. This session will update recent guidance on how we should manage classic CKM risk factors but also explore the reasons for the more recent emphasis on the impact of chronic kidney disease (CKD) on CKM outcomes and the dramatically rising importance of managing obesity
The EPCCS is a WONCA Europe Special Interest Group. The European Primary Care Cardiovascular Society (EPCCS) provides a focus of support, education, research, and policy on issues relating to cardiovascular disease within primary care settings. The focus of the EPCCS is directed at the interests of those working within primary care.
GPcardio The (Global Primary Care Cardio Network) is a collaborative initiative by EPCCS and IPCCS, dedicated to connecting healthcare professionals and organizations in primary care. Our mission is to tackle the growing burden of cardiovascular, cardiometabolic, and cardiorenal diseases by enhancing collaboration, knowledge sharing, and guideline implementation.
