Fifth Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction

the type numbers go, replaced by primary, secondary and procedure-related infarction

Mills NL, Newby LK, Zaman S et al. - European Heart Journal

ESC, ACC, AHA and WHF published the Fifth Universal Definition of MI today in the European Heart Journal, simultaneously in Circulation and Global Heart. The numbered types (1 to 5, 4a to 4c) are replaced by three clinical categories: primary MI (plaque rupture, spontaneous coronary artery dissection, spasm, thrombosis), secondary MI (supply-demand mismatch) and procedure-related MI (within 30 days of a cardiac procedure or surgery). The aim is a language patients understand and a research frame for underdiagnosed causes such as SCAD, which predominantly affects women. Chairs: Nicholas Mills (ESC), Kristin Newby (ACC/AHA), Sarah Zaman (WHF).
