Towards Comprehensive Cardiovascular Health Checks accross Europe
Our board member, Dr. Walter Marrocco, from Italy, represented EPCCS/ GPcardio at a recent session in the European Parliament organized by the European Alliance for Cardiovascular Health (EACH) and the EFPIA - European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations
The discussion focused on the significance of national health check programs as part of the EU Safe Hearts Plan.
Dr. Walter Marrocco emphasized that for cardiovascular screening, particularly in prevention and early diagnosis, to become systematic and sustainable in general practice, a structural strengthening of primary care is essential.
This includes:
- More time for patients
- Increased support staff, such as nurses and practice assistants
- Integrated digital tools that automate cardiovascular risk assessment
Additionally, it is crucial to establish clear diagnostic and therapeutic pathways shared with specialists to reduce referral uncertainty. Organizational and financial incentives related to prevention, along with targeted continuing education programs, are also necessary.
