STAREE randomised almost 10,000 healthy Australians aged 70 and over to atorvastatin or placebo, with disability-free survival as its primary endpoint. Presented in Hot Line 2 at ESC Congress 2026, it addresses the largest remaining evidence gap in primary prevention: whether statins help healthy older adults live longer without disability or dementia. Either outcome will directly change everyday consultations about starting, or stopping, statins in older age.
